Mål:
This is an advanced course intended for research students with projects or an interest in the ubiquitin system involved in pathogenesis particularly relevant for basic and clinical research students focused on cancer, degenerating diseases or infections.

Ubiquitin-mediated regulated proteolysis of intracellular proteins plays a crucial role in many basic cellular processes, including cell cycle regulation, transcriptional activation, and quality control. The growing interest in the system and in proteolysis as a novel regulatory mode and a crucial player in the pathogenesis of a broad variety of diseases, has attracted numerous researchers to the field. Many laboratories in the Karolinska Institute and affiliated hospitals in Stockholm, Sweden, and across Europe are studying different aspects of the system.

This course will review the story of the ubiquitin system as we currently know it. From the regulation of basic cellular processes, through quality control and the pathogenetic mechanisms of disease, from X-ray crystallography of the 26S proteasome, to the interaction between substrates and their ligases, to the development of mechanism-based drugs to target specific pathologic processes.

The course will directed by Dr. Aaron Ciechanover, Dr. Maria Masucci and Dr. Nico Dantuma and will include plenary lectures from experts in the field as well as presentations of selected topics/articles by the participants. The course will include the historical background of the system, the current state of knowledge of the components of the system and their mode of action, key examples for involvement of the system in regulating basic cellular processes, the involvement of the system in pathogenesis of diseases, and the prospects for development of mechanism-based drugs to target some of the diseases.

Innehåll:
This is a full-time daily 2-weeks course containing lectures (20 hrs), group work (18 hrs) individual work (2 hrs) and seminars (10 hrs).

To give students an understanding of basic concepts within developmental biology, including pattern formation mechanisms and clinical aspects of developmental biology, and also to introduce students to cutting edge research within developmental biology.

Innehåll:
Current advances in stem cell research have revealed a greater need for general understanding of the mechanisms that control animal development and pattern formation. Modern developmental biology is an interdisciplinary research field including e.g. cell and molecular biology, cell signalling, embryology, genetics, genomics and proteomics, but has also clinical applications in pediatrics, obstetrics and oncology. Experimental studies are usually concentrated to a small number of animal model systems, e.g. C. elegans, the mouse, drosophila, and zebra fish. This course caters for students who wish to learn about developmental biology, both for those with, and those without, previous contacts with the discipline. The first week serves as a thorough introduction to developmental concepts and basic mechanisms covered by fulltime lectures and literature studies. A leading edge research seminar series on developmental topics will follow. Every week an invited lecturer will present a current facet of developmental biology research, in the form of one review lecture followed by a full research seminar. During these following weeks, pattern formation mechanisms, evolution-developmental biology (evo-devo) and clinical aspects are covered. Course assessment will be based upon completion of weekly literature assignments reflecting the research seminars and course literature. A preliminary schedule including a list of invited speakers is available at http://decs.ki.se (under the heading Postgraduate Course Program).

Mål:
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the context of social innovation and social entrepreneurship. Through project work students will increase their understanding of various theories and practices from the field, while being exposed to the action-oriented skills required for developing and implementing a social innovation and/or creating the social-oriented new venture.

Innehåll:
Content
In our society social needs are addressed in a variety of different ways. Some of these needs are addressed mainly through public organisations, some in private spheres through associations or businesses, and others in informal organisations or maybe not at all. As changes occur in our society, the current practices we use to meet our needs will not necessarily be the same practices we use to meet our needs in the future. In response, a number of initiatives are emerging. The creation of these new initiatives is the focus of this course.

Social innovation involves the identification of new problems and finding new solutions for action, individually or collectively. Entrepreneurship, as the process of developing and carrying out these initiatives, focuses on creating new ‘worlds’ in our minds, in how we discuss these with others, and finally how we actually carry out concrete activities.

Social innovation and entrepreneurship can, and probably will, involve logics from different sectors of society. During the course, ethical, moral and normative issues will be considered in relation to practical examples and project work.
Course topics include:

·Placing innovation & entrepreneurship in a social context
·Entrepreneurship and practices of different sectors
·Innovation and creativity
·Organizing and mobilizing people
·Financing and risks
·Indicators for success and accountability
·Surviving and growing, or?
Structure
A three-hour session held once each week for the entire autumn term.

The course will start with an introduction of theories in the field and different practical examples. During the second phase students will work on projects and action-oriented skills will be elaborated on in seminars. Through these projects students will be able to identify their area of interest
Teaching methods
A blend of teaching methods including lectures, guest lectures, case analysis and presentations and group discussions will be used for the course. Furthermore, there will be monologues, dialogues as well as debates with some of the leading players from academia, business, government and society.
Prerequisites
Students must have a minimum of 80 university credits (120 ECTS respectively), especially in the areas of technology, economics, medicine or biomedicine. Experience with administration/management from a practical or theoretical perspective may be valuable, but is not required.

Mål:
The UN Millennium Goals have adopted malaria as a top priority. A major problem is however area-specific diversity, which affects disease and intervention. The completion of the genome sequences of Homo sapiens, Plasmodium falciparum, and Anopheles gambiae heralds a new era. We apply the new insights to the on-going research in isolated areas. Islands provide natural experiments. The expansion of parasites is coinciding with humans. Tracing the routes from mainland Africa to islands, we aim at a better understanding of how humans, parasites and mosquitoes have co-evolved over time and resulted in the diversity. Our ultimate goal is to develop a novel area-specific strategy in the malaria challenge of the 21st century.

Innehåll:
1. Diversities of the biological agents in malaria transmission:
a) human (immunity/ drug metabolism),
b) parasite (antigenicity/ drug resistance) &
c) vector (refractoriness/ insecticide resistance)
with neutral markers,
2. Evolutionary and ecological processes to promote diversities:
a) historical human settlement patterns,
b) natural environments; climate, island size, fauna and flora,
c) socio-cultural environments; inter- and intra-island human movements, language, and community, and
d) modernization and development; agriculture, local health system, malaria chemotherapy, use of bed nets, and poverty.
e) co-evolutionary processes of biological agents through extension of transmission dynamics & population genetics;
3. Implications of biodiversities on immunities and interventions against malaria infection and disease, toward improved control strategies in relation to local characteristics.

This 2007 course shares the same aims with the previous courses: 2004/2005 Molecular epidemiology with a special focus on malaria (course number 1823) , and 2006 Global malaria in the post-genomic era (course number 18231).
Students with different disciplines are encouraged to participate in this course: including clinical science, molecular medicine, epidemiology, ecology, environmental medicine and public health. Interactions among them will be an important component of the course.

Mål:
The main objective is to lead the participating students through a business development process, involving everything from the development of the idea to the final business plan. The underlying objectives are:
-Development of ideas
-Sorting of ideas
-Creation of a business plan for new ventures or established businesses
-Evaluation of the business plan and to decide whether a business can be established, taking into account marketing, economic and organisational issues

Innehåll:

As the commercialisation of an idea into a business is highly dependent on the will power and competence of the people involved, the team must be highly motivated and have a real trust in their project as well as the competence to develop the idea into a business.

The ideas developed within the framework of the course should be innovative in the sense that they are based on technical innovations, new scientific results, or new creative methods for organising resources or marketing products and services. Start by looking in your own backyard; a lot of interesting research and development is going on at The Royal Institute of Technology, The Stockholm School of Economic, The University College of Arts Crafts and Design and Karolinska Institute.

People with real life experience gained from entrepreneurial work and business development will give some of the scheduled lectures during the course.
Students shall form groups by four to develop their ideas into business plans. Ideas and plans will be discussed at seminars attended by co-students and a ‘coach’. The objective of the seminars is to provide students with a forum to discuss their ideas with other students who study different disciplines and who bring to the seminar a variety of skills and business ideas. Toward the end of the seminar series the main objective changes to producing a business plan and to discussing the possibility of successfully launching the different business ideas.

The two best business plans presented during the course will have the opportunity to participate in the competitions -European Business Plan of the Year- organised by London Business School and INSEAD and -Venture Challenge- organised by San Diego State University. Both events are frequented by Venture Capital businesses that are interested in supporting promising young entrepreneurs. Previous participants at this event from the SSES are today managing successful enterprises.
Structure
There will be two weekly sessions lasting two hours each for seven weeks. In addition to this business plan teams will meet several times to be coached in smaller groups by an expert. Each session will involve a mix of teaching methods, see below. Presentation to a panel of the completed business plan will take place in an additional week.
Teaching methods
The course will involve lectures and regular seminars with academics as well as practitioners. Subsequently, each student team will be mentored throughout the actual creation of the business plan by an individually assigned coach.
Prerequisites
Students must have a minimum of 80 university credits (120 ECTS respectively), especially in the areas of technology, economics, medicine, biomedicine or design. Experience with administration/management from a practical or theoretical perspective may be valuable, but is not required.

Mål:
The overall aim is to give a view of the role of medicinal drug use, especially antibiotics, in societies throughout the world, focussing on interventions to improve drug use.

Innehåll:
Sources to describe drug utilisation will be presented, together with possibilities and difficulties to collect appropriate data to show the level of drug use in a given population. Methods to estimate the level of self-medication and people’s beliefs and behaviour will also be shown and discussed. The use of antibiotics will be used as an example as infections are one of the leading causes of morbidity worldwide. Furthermore, the use of antibiotics carries a special problem in that resistance affecting not only previously treated persons but also previously untreated persons may spread throughout the world. Antimicrobial resistance has been recognized as a threat to public health in all countries, by both WHO and EU. Examples of antibiotic use from from countries of different income level and from different parts of the health system will be presented and discussed. In addition factors affecting drug use, both on macro- and micro-level will be mapped out and discussed. The case of Europe will be presented, where it has been shown that antibiotic use is very different between neighbouring countries which indicates that other factors beside strict medical factors play an important role. Decisions to use drugs are taken in homes, pharmacies or other drug outlets, within primary health care as well as in hospitals. The concept of rational use of drugs includes correct use of good quality drugs at an affordable cost. Methods to increase the rational use of drugs, and in particular antibiotics, will be presented, including the role of guidelines and various kinds of information or educational interventions directed to health care professionals, patients or the public. Ways of evaluating such interventions will be presented and discussed. The concept and content of National Drug Policies (NDP), which include elements such as legislation and drug quality assurance, development of guidelines and information material, and monitoring of drug use, will be presented. The development and implementation of an NDP in Laos - a low income country - will be used as an example. One specific feature of the Lao NDP is that health systems research has been included as one element, and several projects concerning antibiotic use have been carried out.

Mål:

The objective of the course is to enable the student to run a business of her or his own. The course is designed to address important issues faced when running a company, focusing on critical processes and in particular processes required in the young firm.

Innehåll:
Content
The course focuses on supporting the student in her or his decisions and other action in the new business venture. It is assumed that students entering the course have a formulated business idea to be realized, as well as a genuine interest in pursuing this business idea in their own company.

The outline of the course is built on experience from active entrepreneurs and follows the typical stages in a new venture, starting with the evaluation and refinement of the existing business idea, moving on to resourcing (venture capital supply, internal resources etc), market and communication plans etc. The course will focus on

-Strategy (What?) i.e. markets, offer, business idea, getting-started and setting up a board of directors
-People (Who?) i.e. entrepreneurial team, recruitment and motivation
-Operational work (Let’s do it!) i.e. management/culture, sales/marketing, production and negotiation.

Theoretically, the course connects to the opportunity-based models of entrepreneurship and business creation, as well as to a contextual approach to the venture creation process (i.e. the idea that the very character of the venture creation process is dependent on the type of business, as for instance in the biotechnology, TIME, finance or environmental technology sectors).

Students with the best business projects will be given the chance to present them to a panel of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.
Structure
There will be two weekly sessions lasting three hours each for seven weeks. Final project hand-in and presentations will take place during the eighth week.
Teaching methods
A blend of teaching methods including lectures, guest lectures, case analysis and presentations, project work and group discussions will be used for the course.
Prerequisites
Students must have a minimum of 80 university credits (120 ECTS respectively), especially in the areas of technology, economics, medicine, biomedicine or design. Experience with administration/management from a practical or theoretical perspective may be valuable, but is not required.

Data från bl.a.

Frågorna formuleras i ordnade klasser såsom:

The course aim is to give a comprehensive treatment of the core of modern statistical modelling.

Innehåll:
Data analysis cannot be learned without actually doing it. In this course the participants will spend most of their time analysing data. This implies using statistical software, in this course we will use R throughout the course. R is free software available on all platforms including Windows, Macintosh, Linux and UNIX platforms, meaning that participants can download R to their own computer, which will be absolutely necessary for this course. Because R is free, the participants will always have access to the latest version. R requires some effort to learn so the participant should be prepared for some hard work. Since R is the standard for statistical computing among research statisticians participants will always have access to a software which implements modern statistical methods.

However this is not primarily a course about R, even though the participants will certainly learn a thing or two about R. This is primarily a course on statistical modelling. In this course a general framework of statistical modelling will be presented. This framework constitutes the core knowledge for conducting data analysis and includes most of the commonly used statistical methods in medical research as special cases. The course will start with linear models, which includes regression analysis and ANOVA. The course then goes on to study three important extensions to the linear model: Generalized linear models which can represent categorical, binary and other response types. Mixed effects models which can represent data that arise from repeated mesures, longitutinal data or multilevel data. Nonparametric regression models which are very flexible and can be used when there is not a linear relationship between the explanatory variables and the response variable.
Throughout the course the participant will perform a very large amount of practical work. This is the only true way that one can really learn the art of statistical modelling. For each session the participants will be given an exercise that will show that they have understood the concepts of that particular session. Participants will also be given the opportunity to work with their own data and they will give two presentations during the course.

The course will be spread out over a period of 10 weeks. Sessions will be scheduled once a week. Each of these days will start with a lecture in the morning. In the afternoon there will be a practical session in front of the computer. For each session the participants will be given an exercise to be performed using R to demonstrate that they have understood the concepts of that particular session. This exercise should be finished at home and written reports handed in.

Prior participation in the basic course in medical statistics or equivalent is a minimum requirement. The course presumes a good understanding of the basics of statistical inference and elementary calculus.

Mål:
1. To provide an introduction to counterfactual theory and methods for causal inference from observational data.
2. To present the latest methodological developments for causal inference (by Robins and others) to an epidemiologic audience.

Innehåll:
Causal inference from observational data is a key task of biostatistics and of allied sciences such as sociology, education, behavioural sciences, demography, economics, health services research , etc. These disciplines share a methodological framework for causal inference that has been developed over the last decades.

This course presents this unifying causal theory and shows how biostatistical concepts and methods can be understood within this general framework. The course emphasizes conceptualization but also introduces statistical models and methods for time-varying exposures. Specifically, this course strives to a) formally define causal concepts such as causal effect and confounding, b) identify the conditions required to estimate causal effects, and c) use analytical methods that, under those conditions, provide estimates that can be endowed with a causal interpretation. The (causal) methods can be used under less restrictive conditions than the traditional statistical methods. For example, causal methods allow one to estimate the causal effect of a time-varying exposure in the presence of time-dependent confounders that lie on the causal pathway between exposure and outcome.
