ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE AND RESISTANCE MECHANISMS IN BACTERIAL PATHOGENS

The main resesarch theme in the laboratory is antimicrobial resistance, particularly the epidemiology of resistance, the molecular and genetic basis of resistance, its spread in the community and between bacteria, and also methodological aspects of antimicrobial susceptibility testing (e.g. species-related interpretive breakpoints).

Studies of antimicrobial resistance over time (1988 - 1999) in our hospital, Karolinska University hospital, Stockholm, have been performed, both in relation to consumption and comparing levels in wards and ICU:s. Similar studies were also performed in 12 different hospitals covering all different parts of Sweden.

Special studies in the field of antimicrobial resistance are performed in collaborations with Mattias Larsson, Torkel Falkenberg and Göran Tomson at IHCAR, Karolinska institute, particularly regarding antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance in Vietnam and in Latin America. These studies have shown an extensive overuse of antibiotics and high resistance rates among common respiratory tract pathogens in Vietnamese children. In the South American studies (project ANTRES) we use a newly extended screening method for detecting resistance in both the dominant faecal flora and in rare clones.

A previous line of research focused on bacterial proteins binding human and/or animal proteins and their role in pathogenesis, receptin research. Plasminogen/plasmin receptins in H.pylori have been studied in recent years.

Other hospital staff members in Clinical microbiology at the division of Clinical microbiology, Karolinska laboratory, pursue scientific research related to their clinical responsibilities and interests.
