Coagulation is normally localised to the site of injury. The vitamin K dependent coagulation factors FIX, FX and FII (prothrombin) bind to phospholipids via Ca2+ on the cell surface of activated platelets, thereby localising the process. In this manner coagulation factors which are found in very low concentrations in circulation are concentrated on the platelet cell surface.
