
Intestinal pseudo-obstruction labels a rare group of diseases that may lead to failure of gut functions. The meaning of the word "pseudo-obstruction" is that clinical signs and symptoms may resemble those that can be observed in patients with a mechanical obstruction of the gut. However, in pseudo-obstruction no mechanical obstruction is present and failure to propel the contents of the gut follows from loss of co-ordination or weakness of muscle contractions in the gut wall.
