Curriculum vitæ

I was born on September 14, 1951 in Borgsjö, Sweden. In 1971 I moved to Stockholm and in 1972 I entered the Medical School at Karolinska Institutet where I received my MD in 1978. Between 1980-1992 I worked in the Department of Medicine at Huddinge University Hospital, where I qualified as a Specialist in Internal Medicine 1985 and in Gastroenterology 1988. In 1991 I was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist (överläkare). In 1992 I moved with the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology to the Department of Surgery and in 1996 surgeons and physicians at Huddinge University Hospital joined to form the Centre for Gastroenterology where I work today.

I have been involved with clinical research since 1975. My early research concerned medical decision making, cost-benefit analysis, and computer assisted diagnosis and in 1982 I defended my PhD thesis "Studies on Diagnostic Decision Making in Jaundice". After that I studied the pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, and treatment of patients with various forms of dyspepsia. This led to a growing interest in gastrointestinal motility. I have worked with the development of new diagnostic techniques such as ambulatory monitoring of small bowel motility and electrogastrography. I am head of the Gastrointestinal Laboratory and I have three doctoral students who work with motility related projects. My own research has concentrated upon gastrointestinal motility disorders with particular interest in intestinal pseudo-obstruction. In 1991 I was appointed Associate Professor of Medicine at Karolinska Institutet. My scientific production includes 96 papers.

I am member of the Swedish Society of Medicine, the Swedish Society of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA), and the Functional/Brain-Gut Research Group. I review manuscripts for Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (Guest editor), Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology (Guest Associate Editor), Gut and Gastroenterology (Guest Associate Editor).

Research projects

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction This project aims at establishing a knowledge centre on the Internet for both patients and professionals about chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, a group of rare but severe disorders affecting gut motility. This project is supported by the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden.
Causes for the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Previous hypotheses about causality in IBS were based on the thought that mental stress could cause somatic symptoms. However, our research has shown that patients with IBS have changes in the nervous system of the gut with neuropathy often accompanied by inflammation. Hans Törnblom is the doctoral student working on this project.
Electrogastrography The aim of this project is to investigate the clinical utility of recording gastric electric activity using surface electrodes. This is a collaborative project with Professor Henrik Sjövall at Sahlgren's Hospital, Gothenburg.
Chaos in gastrointestinal motility The idea that biological systems are linear is probably wrong. I have therefore began exploring the non-linear dynamics of electric and contractile activity in the gut. I am not at all certain where this is going to take me but it is fun looking at things from another viewpoint.

The GASTROLAB Home Page Extensive site with gastrointesinal information from Hans Björknäs, MD, Vasa, Finland. The site includes a large endoscopic picture gallery.
Motilides Theo Peeter's page about motilin agonists and their use in modifying gut motility. A lot of the research about motilides has been done in the Catholic University of Leuwen where this web site resides.
ELECTROGASTROGRAPHY This is a fun and well written and pictured introduction to cutaneous recordings of gastric electric activity by Martin Mintchev at the University of Calgary.
Computer Virus Myths & Hoaxes A fascinating story-book of the myths of the computer age. An anxiety-relieving site for those who are afraid of viruses. Should be read by journalists before they publish.
